February Is The Gum Disease Awareness Month
According to WHO, more than 2 billion people worldwide have not treated their cavities, billion people have server gum disease, nearly half of the world's population has untreated oral disease. These statistics is alarming. According to the NIDCR, for adults gum disease is the number 1 leading cause of premature tooth loss. As gum disease gets worse, the bacteria in your gums spread into the jaw and the roots of your teeth, causing permanent, irreversible damage to your teeth.
February is gum disease awareness month. The awareness program was launched in 2012 by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, a non-profit educational and research center dedicated to providing evidence-based clinical training in advanced laser dentistry therapies. The program's goal is to raise awareness of oral disease and encourage people to take an active role in better oral health through prevention.
There is a number of steps you can take to avoid gum disease and keep your mouth healthy. Here are a few of them.
Brush teeth twice a day
Floss teeth at least once a day
Change toothbrush every 3 months
Quit cigarette or oral tobacco
Minimize sugary and starchy foods in your diet
Visit your dentist regularly
